Debut Review: Like Water by Wendy of Red Velvet

It's always nice when we're able to do Debut Reviews. Especially when it's a solo debut. It signals a new beginning and a fresh start. Which is something that is very much appreciated during a depressing, global pandemic. Coincidentally, Red Velvet's (which has unfortunately not released any new songs or even hints for a future comeback for more than a year) Wendy has recently made her solo debut! So, without further ado, let's review it! Using our regular formula for reviews, of course!

Less than a minute in; Wow, the visuals for the music video are absolutely stunning. I know this review is mainly about the song, but that's gotta add up to something, right? Regardless, the guitar playing in the introduction is so spare and calming. It really does contribute to the overall chill vibe of the song. And then Wendy starts singing. And the song gets better. There's a reason she was the main vocalist in Red Velvet. The song is, so far, very spare and acoustic. This definitely works in its favor and contributes to a relaxing song with an indie aesthetic.

One minute in; The chorus has begun, and it plays off of everything the song has been leading up to. This truly is such a unique K-Pop Song. It's rare to see a song with such a meaningful and pretty chorus paired with a nice instrumental, interesting message, good rest of song, and lovely music video. This song, so far, has the best of everything. To quote Kronk; "Oh yeah, it's all coming together."

Two minutes in; The verses start again, a bit heavier with a strong drum beat. Wendy's vocals paired with the guitar playing in the background continues to contribute to an all around wonderful song. I don't usually like indie styling in music, especially when paired with an otherwise energetic genre such as pop or rock. However, Wendy managed to make a non-boring indie pop song.

Three minutes in; We've reached the bridge. Otherwise known as the high note section and the most aurally pleasing section. It delivers and that is all I need to say. Listen to the song and figure out yourself. This is also the part where the Music Video gets the most exciting.

Four Minutes in; There is now a piano paired in with the instrumental. This contributes to the scarce feeling yet again and also provides a lovely ending for the song. And that's it. The song is around 4 minutes and 32 seconds long. It's the longest song we've reviewed, but that does not at all detract from the quality.

Final thoughts; Although practically everybody on Earth would really prefer if OT5 Red Velvet could make a full comeback, Wendy's solo debut more than helps keep Reveluvs calm and waiting with amazing vocals, fantastic songwriting, and a great melody. This is definitely around 9 stegosauruses out of 10. Maybe 9 and a half? This is amazing, I'd suggest that all of you guys listen to this. With that being said, HYFRIENDMedia is signing off.
